Alicante was founded in -324 by the Greeks who named it Akra Leuke ("White Peak"). In -201 Alicante was taken by the Romans who changed its name to Lucentum. Hannibal would have landed his famous war elephants. The actual location of Lucentum was discussed but the origin of the modern city is not from the latter, the former having been Lucentum be abandoned by the people or absorbed by the new medina leqant, founded by Arabs in the area now known as The Vilavella (Old Town).
Under the Treaty of Cazorla (signed in Soria in 1179) between Alfonso VII of Castile and Alfonso II of Aragon, was fixed on a line connecting Biar Castalla Jijona and Calpe. This meant that lived in the Alicante area of expansion Castilian. Alicante was besieged by the British in 1707 during the War of Spanish Succession, then by the French in 1709 during the War of Spanish Succession in 1812 and during the Spanish Civil War. Finally, it was besieged by the Federalists of Cartagena in 1873.
During the Spanish Civil War, Alicante and stayed on the Republican side was bombed by the Italian and German air forces. The largest attack was the bombing of the Central Market, which caused the deaths of more than 300 people.
After the war Algeria, Alicante received a considerable number of Blackfoot, most descendants of former residents of the province who had migrated in French Algeria in the early century.
Since the 1960s has changed radically in Alicante and its population has increased significantly.
