Palma has 396,483 inhabitants. It is located in the Bay of Palma, in a fertile valley surrounded by the Sierra de Tramuntana (mountains) to the west by the mountains of Pla to the north and the Marina de Llucmajor east. The average annual temperature is 17 º. It is 300 days per year of sunshine.
The story of the "city of Mallorca" (we called it as formerly) is the same as that of Mallorca until 1229, when King Jaime I the Conqueror had conquered and had installed government in the city of Palma. He had built the University also in 1429. Palma and the islands were under the reign of King James I, James II, Jaime III of Aragon, who gave the land to the noble Catalan colonizing the islands for 114 years. As a result, in 1343 the islands fell under the Kingdom of Aragon. Later, in 1716 King Felipe V had begun to appoint Palma. The Balearic Islands were one of the Spanish provinces until 1983, when it rose to be an Autonomous Community.
Walking: The most important street of Palma is the Passeig des Born is the most commercial street and the point of meeting people. It is full of shops, bars and restaurants. Walking through the old neighborhood is wonderful. There are many manor centuries XVII-XVIII-XIX, houses splendid style with an Italian influence. Churches transmitting the authenticity and history. The Plaza Mayor is one of the hotspots of the city. Besides, they are located Ramblas Avenue and James II, they are two busy commercial streets.
Another nice walk is to go to the Port of Palma to Arenal. They are 16 Km ride from beach to beach: Playa El Portixol, Coll d'en Rabassa, Can Pastilla. Other beaches in Palma Playa Illetas and Santa Ponca. All these beaches have water and crystal clear and very fine sand.
