Discover Almaty (Kazakhstan)

The former capital of Kazakhstan, Almaty, is also its biggest city. Sometimes called the City of Apples, this destination is a perfect place to stay while discovering the sights of central Asia. Still a cultural centre, Almaty boasts plenty of restaurants, attractions and historical sites that will satisfy any tourist. The best way to discover the best of the region is to arrange a car rental in Almaty. This will allow you to get out and about, exploring at your own pace and getting off the beaten track to some of the more unique spots that this beautiful region has to offer.

One of the most popular spots for tourists and locals alike is Kok-Tobe. This hilltop entertainment area offers stunning views over the mountains and city and there are also some excellent restaurants and theme park style attractions to visit.

If you arrange car rental in Almaty you can head to Medeu, the outdoor ice skating rink in the mountains outside the city centre. Not only can you admire great views, you can also have a lot of fun on the ice. Alternatively, head to the ski resort of Shymbulak where you can take to the slopes.

If you'd like to take a day away from the city, head to Big Almaty Lake. Called Bao by the locals, this lovely retreat is high in the mountains and is perfect for sunbathing during the summer months.

Within easy driving distance of Almaty you'll also find plenty of National Parks, all of which are worth a visit. Whether you'd like to see glacial lakes, craggy canyons, ancient petroglyphs or golden dunes, you'll find something to satisfy you. The Kolsai Lakes National Park has three beautiful lakes as well as evergreen forests and waterfalls while Kaindy Lake is colourful and serene. Charyn Canyon is another great spot to explore, with many similarities to the Grand Canyon, and you can swim and hike here to your heart's content. Meanwhile, the Altyn-Emel National Park has golden sand dunes and a remote location that is truly spectacular to behold. Any of these spots would make a fantastic detour from the city if you'd like to get out and about and see the best of Kazakhstan.
