Discover Podgorica (Montenegro)


The city of Podgorica is located on the Zeta Plain in the south of Montenegro. It has many cultural attractions, including museums, an art gallery, imaginative contemporary architecture and some of the most beautiful countryside in the Balkan Peninsula. Contemporary Attractions

The Dajbabska Gora Tower supervises radio frequencies in the area. It stands fifty-five metres tall and has become one of the city's most distinctive monuments since it was constructed in 2011. Podgorica has become famous for the metallic bridges spanning the Morača River which runs through the centre of the city. The Millennium Bridge has multiple counterweighted cables attached to a central pillar and provides car and pedestrian access. Nearby is the Moscow Bridge which is exclusively for pedestrians.

Historical Monuments

Podgorica has many historical attractions to visit including several museums. There is an extensive art gallery in King Nicholas's Castle and the adjoining House of the Honour Guard inside the city's main park. There is also an imposing statue dedicated to Montenegro's last monarch, King Nikola, who reigned from 1860 to 1918. Although the Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ was built in 1993, its beautiful, ornate interior has been inspired by Roman and Byzantine art. Four kilometres to the north of Podgorica are the remains of the Roman settlement, Doclea, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The Monastery Dajbabe is an unusual church that is mostly built inside a cave in the Dajbabska Gora hills.

Beautiful Countryside

A few kilometres to the south of Podgorica is the Lake Skadar National Park. It has outstanding natural scenery and is an important haven for the region's wildlife. There are magnificent views of the Dinaric Alps mountain range and Morača River, which forms a distinctive horseshoe bend as it flows through the nearby hills and into the freshwater lake. Many species of wild birds can be seen including, ducks, white spoonbills and little egrets. The peat islands at the northern area of the lake provide a home for an endangered species of pelican. The park is popular for walking, cycling. pony trekking and swimming. There are pleasure boat cruises on the lake and activities such as swimming.
