The Azores are an archipelago of nine volcanic islands in the North Atlantic Ocean. The islands are located about 1,500 kilometers (930 miles) west of Lisbon, Portugal, and about 3,900 kilometers (2,400 miles) east of New York City. The islands have a total land area of 2,333 square kilometers (901 square miles).
The climate is temperate and mild, with average temperatures ranging from 18°C to 24°C (64°F to 75°F). The islands are wet and windy, with an average of 2,000 millimeters (79 inches) of rainfall per year.
The archipelago has many beautiful beaches, including Praia Grande, Praia Moinhos, and Praia Almoxarife. Praia Grande is a wide, sandy beach that stretches for more than two kilometers (1.2 miles). The beach is popular with surfers and windsurfers. Praia Moinhos is a smaller beach with a rocky coastline. Praia Almoxarife is a secluded beach with crystal-clear water and a natural pool.
The Azores are also home to several beautiful natural pools, including Piscina Natural do Porto Formoso and Piscina Natural da Ribeira Grande. Piscina Natural do Porto Formoso is a large natural pool that is popular with locals and visitors. Piscina Natural da Ribeira Grande is a smaller natural pool that is surrounded by cliffs and vegetation.
