Salvador de Bahia is a city on the north coast of Brazil. Superbly placed along the sapphire blue Atlantic Ocean, Salvador is surrounded by idyllic stretches of white sandy beaches, and is second to nowhere in Brazil for its cultural diversity and vibrant arts and music scene. The city is a kaleidoscopic showcase of African culture that has been fiercely protected since it was at the centre of the slave trade in the 16th century. The winding streets of Pelourinho, Salvador s captivating UNESCO protected old town, literally dance along to the rhythm of the African beat. Narrow cobblestone streets are tightly packed with brightly coloured 17th and 18th century colonial architecture that open out onto shaded plazas, as energetic locals performing capoeira in front of bustling restaurants and street cafes. Overlooking the sweeping bay of Todos os Santos, this friendly Brazilian city happily basks in the glory of its spectacular setting and cultural heritage.
