Discover La Rochelle (France)

La Rochelle is a bustling city and port on the Bay of Biscay, western France. La Rochelle's rich seafaring history is pronounced in the town's animated Vieux Port (the old port) presided by three soaring defence towers that date back to the 14th and 15th centuries. These magnificent towers, on the threshold of the historic quarter, afford breathtaking vistas of the town and Atlantic. Handsome porticoed streets lined with grandiose medieval buildings and sweeping belle époque architecture open onto colourful market squares. Over by the waterfront, plates of steaming mussels and La Rochelle's renowned fresh seafood satisfy hungry clientele. Just 3km across the water, the idyllic island of Ile de Ré with its charming laid-back harbour town of Saint Martin de Ré and secluded beaches, is easily reached by a connecting bridge.
