For nightlife, Kardamena is a bustling hotspot, packed with bars, clubs and taverns along the beachfront where revellers can party until dawn.

For quieter beaches, the former capital of Kefalos has preserved a more traditional feel, where one can explore the history of Kos and still have a good choice of shops and restaurants.

Further inland, nestled amongst lush green forests, on the slopes of the largest mountain, lies the village of Zia. Here you can experience breath-taking views and beautiful scenery, with shops offering local natural products.

There is so much to discover in Kos; guarding the harbour is the magnificent 15th century Neratzia Castle of the Knights of St John, the impressive exterior may suggest more than the ancient ruins to be explored. Close by and worth a visit is the Plane Tree of Hippocrates, under which the famous Greek physician taught medicine, as legend has it. South of the castle is the fascinating archaeological site of Ancient Agora, exposed in 1933 by a devastating earthquake, where the Roman town remains can be seen. Monuments include the Temple of Hercules, and the Shrine of Aphrodite ruins.

To the West, in Mastichari, lies the Ancient House-Hippocrates Garden, a cultural centre, showcasing an exact replica of an ancient Greek 5th century B.C settlement. Close by is the Traditional Windmill of Antimacheia; over 200 years old, and the last still in use.
