Found within the region of Macedonia and home to more than one million residents, Thessaloniki is a city steeped in history and culture. As it is currently the second largest city within Greece, its urban districts as well as its surroundings are well-known tourist destinations.
While the city was officially founded in 350 BCE, many historians believe that its history can be traced back much further. Another interesting fact regarding Thessaloniki is that it was one of the first centres of Christianity. This prominence enabled it to gain a reputation similar to that of Rome and Constantinople; establishing the city as well-known trading port.
While there are many unique areas within this city, many choose to visit the Ano Poli (the Upper Town) and to experience the affluence associated with Southeastern Thessaloniki. Indeed, there is something here for everyone.
It is first important to mention that unlike many other European cities, Thessaloniki enjoys a moderate climate throughout the year. Therefore, even the winter months are associated with a host of unique attractions. One shining example is the White Tower of Thessaloniki. As it is arguably the most prominent point of interest, untold numbers of tourists will visit here to take advantage of its in-house museum. This is also an excellent way to enjoy an in-depth look at the history of the city.
Others might choose to experience the mesmerising beauty associated with the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki. Billed as "a museum of all", this is a particularly good idea if you happen to be arriving with your family or a group of friends. These are only two examples of the innumerable sights that Thessaloniki has in store. Be sure to perform additional research in order to enjoy an unforgettable holiday.
