Samos is a Greek island in the eastern Aegean Sea. It is also a municipality of the Samos regional unit. The Municipality of Samos includes the inhabited islands of Samos, Karlovasi, Marathokampos, and Vathi. Samos is located in the North Aegean Sea. It is about 78 nautical miles (144 km) from Piraeus, the port of Athens, and about 10 nautical miles (19 km) from the coast of Asia Minor. The municipality has an area of 1,424. 09 km2. The island's main town and capital is Vathy or Karlovasi. Samos is a popular tourist destination, with several beautiful beaches and landscapes. The Pythagoreion and the Heraion of Samos are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Samos is also home to the Port of Samos, the only commercial airport on the island, and the Dimitra Airport. The island has many hotels, apartments, restaurants, and shops.
