Sines is a Portuguese town located in Alentejo in the southwestern part of the country and on the Atlantic coast. The town has a population of under 20,000 people. The most noteworthy citizen of Sines was the 15th century explorer, Vasco da Gama. The climate consists of wet, mild winters and dry, hot summers. Originally a fishing village, Sines has grown and now has an industrial zone and port area. However, just a ten minute drive down the coast from Sines there are a number of coves and beaches which will provide perfect conditions for the holidaymaker. The beach known as Praia de São Torpes is awarded the blue flag for its water quality each year.
