Discover Manchester (United-states)


Manchester is a city in the north of England, and is one of the biggest cities overall in the UK. As well as there being attractions in the city centre, there are plenty of places to visit around Greater Manchester.

For a glimpse into the technological and scientific history of Manchester, as well as a vision into the future, the Museum of Science & Industry (MOSI) is well worth a visit : MOSI. The museum is spread over several buildings and there are activities and sights to interest people of every age.

The John Rylands Library is one of Manchester’s hidden gems, and is a prime example of Victorian Neo-Gothic architecture. The library has various exhibitions, sumptuous interiors, as well as collections of rare and vintage books including a fragment of a Bible from 125 AD.

Manchester Art Gallery is also a popular place to visit, with a wide range of exhibitions spanning various eras, including many examples of Pre-Raphaelite art. The gallery is family friendly and hosts an interactive play area for young children. Recent temporary exhibitions include works by Grayson Perry.

If you’re interested in ancient and prehistoric artefacts, you may want to pay a visit to The Manchester Museum. The museum hosts a complete Tyrannosaurus Rex skeleton, as well as exhibits from ancient Egypt. There is plenty to see and do at the museum, and all ages are well catered for.

A bit further away from the centre of Manchester is the Abbotsfield Park Miniature Railway, for a fun family day out. If you have any children who love trains, they will adore this miniature railway, and unlike many attractions around today, the cost per passenger on the train is an inflation busting 30p!

Manchester also has its own Chinatown, which is also well worth a visit, as being one of the largest in Europe. Chinatown is a good place to visit if you fancy some oriental cuisine, browse for groceries and gifts, or simply just to look around!
